It’s that time again folks…actually it was that time again weeks ago.

My poles are ready, the boat’s gassed up…I’ve got musicians in waiting, and all the rooms booked up.

Starting right now we are selling tickets for the Third Annual Fishing With Flaco, a music trip with some angling undertones, sponsored by Lone Oak Motors, all of which support CASA of Central Texas.

It goes like this…for $5 dollars you can get a chance to win accomodations down on the Texas Coast, a whole bunch of professionally cooked up food, a few hours in a boat, and live acoustic music by a group of talented songwriters, guitar pickers, and all around good liars.

Shoot, $20 will get you 5 chances…can’t beat that.

The Drawing will be held February 29th at Lone Oak Motors, and the trip will be March 23 and 24.

I know I didn’t leave a whole lot of time, but last year we donated $1750 dollars to Casa…I’m the competitive kind. I want to knock that money out of the park!

The hunt is next week…We’ve had a great response and were able to make a signifcant donation to Kailey and her mission.

I plan on taking some video of our hunt, so stay tuned!

This here’s a quick one, it starts right now (11/17) and runs until December 17th.

What’s the prize? A weekend quail hunt in a yet to be disclosed North Texas location, Jan 14th, with the $5 rabbit cast, Beau Hinze, Luke Adair, and myself…you can smell Oklahoma from this place, but don’t hold that against it! I kid. The winner and 1 guest will come in on Friday night and get ready for a Saturday hunt.

Saturday morning after breakfast we’ll follow the dogs around looking for some quail birds.

I know what your asking, and yes Huey will definitely be there.

We’ll break for lunch, maybe take a nap, have a beer, brag or poke fun at gun skills, and then head out for an afternoon hunt.

Saturday evening we’ll have a meal, and then Beau, Luke and I will break out in story and song.

A good nights sleep and then you’re headed home.

Who’s it for? My niece, Kailey, and several of her friends are taking a mission trip to Africa. This will be her third trip, but first to Africa. The other two were to Ecuador and Belize.

She shared her itinerary:

“We are leaving on May 14th and coming back June 4th. We are flying to Nairobi, where we will stay for a few days. Then we will travel to Lemoru to build a prayer center and meet with the widows. The widows in Africa have no worth because they are believed to be the reason their husbands are dead. They are not allowed to have land and they live outside the community. So we will go and meet with them and just let them know they are loved. We will also be hiking up Mt. Elgon meeting with different villages on the way. The main reason being that there is a tribe on top of the mountain that has never been reached. No one knew they were there until recently because they are nomadic. So we will be going to meet with them and just try to make a connection, that way we can become friends and go back and eventually take the gospel with us. Of course, when we think they are comfortable enough with us. After that we will be going to stay at Mattaw Children’s Village. It is ran by a couple from San Angelo and they house, feed, teach and love street children who have no one else. They have made it into a community so the children don’t feel like orphans. After that we will travel back to Nairobi for a couple of day and then head home.”

The weekend started early…real freaking early. Herman and I left the Adair compound at 3:30 in the morning.

We got to Luke Adair acres around 5, and hit Port O’Connor at 8:30

We met Zac and Dustin Wright, last year’s winners and part of the fishin’ family, and after a small delay at the marina we went out to get blasted by the wind for a few hours.

We loaded up to meet the folks over at Hopper’s landing, but first made a quick stop at Barkett’s in Seadrift. Folks, if you ever find yourself hungry in Seadrift, do yourself a favor and stop in to see the friendly staff at Barkett’s. This might be the best damn grub on the middle coast.

Once we reached Hopper’s we met up with Riley, Garrett and Todd who were this year’s lucky winners. We had us a cold beer and got settled in, then I took the winners out to get blasted by the wind. I didn’t want them to feel left out.

Friday night we had a wild game buffet, highlighted by bacon wrapped back strap and quail, and Byron Kalbas’ cheese and jalapeno venison sausage. Deeelicious.

Some of the guys bartered a 6 pack for a cooler full of fresh Oysters that had just been harvested from the bay that day. Shucked, sucked, and disposed of properly.

Tres, James, Luke, Byron and I sat around and played a few tunes when someone decided to go scout out Adella’s bar which was just up the hill. There were two things that were missing in the bar, a full set of teeth and the 30 mph wind. We decided to just go take the dang place over and luckily received with open arms by the locals and Adella herself. Adella pours a mean drink…go by and see her sometime.

Sat morn we got up and Bart cooked us quite possibly the best breakfast burrito ever. The trick to a good breakfast burrito is hand made hash browns, and eating it before the hangover fully kicks in. This process is aided by spicy V8.

After breakfast we made about an hour trip over to Port O’Connor to seek a little reprieve from the wind. Austwell is a gateway to some great fishing, but with the prevailing winds we felt like a little cover would be great. Plus I had been beat all to hell the day before, and was kinda tired of it.

I won’t lie, fishing was tough, but we gave her all we could give her. Three boats, 11 poles, and a whole lotta hope put a few fish in the box. The winner went home with enough meat to feed the 14 virgins that Osama Bin Laden a’int never gonna see.

Saturday night found us tired, but still running. We didn’t get quite as rowdy as the night before, but had a fresh fish dinner and still able to play a song or two. Of course the highlight of the night was discussing the day of whimsical musings of Mr. Garrett and just what exactly comes with a Red Velvet Dolphin.

Sunday morning we slept in a little, had another Lone Oak Motor breakfast, and cleaned the place up. We thanked Adella for the hospitality and hit the road.

I’m forced to leave a lot of the weekend out, because it’s what comes with winning. Maybe if you win next year, you’ll know about Corazon, Red Velvet Dolphins, the safe way to unroll a prophylactic, and why you never talk bad about the Hoppers around Dustin.
